THE ROOTS AND WINGS PROJECT airs the first Saturday of each month 10-11 AM on THINK OUTSIDE THE CAGE 90.7 FM. Voices from Inside: The Truth About Mass Incarceration.

MATRIARCH is an evening of theatre that represents the demand for justice for women. MATRIACH embodies an unorthodox exploration of the roles women play in a patriarchal society and the urgent need to transform the current dynamic.

In a time where patriarchy continues to oppress matriarchal roles through all color lines, this powerful work speaks to the critical call for women in our society to be honored and respected. Some of Los Angeles’ most prominent writers and performers unite to bring you a night that will empower, provoke and uplift your spirit.

This all-star line up is complete with theatre legends and literary giants Jesse Bliss, Sigrid Gilmer, Tamika Simpkins, Tamar Halpern, Rose Portillo, Laruen Ballesteros, Tamika Simpkins, Roger Q. Mason, Jamal Douglas, Diane Rodriguez, and Patricia Zamorano.

Jesse Bliss and Visual Artist Alfie Numeric unite forces with the chapbook I LOVE MYSELF GOLDEN. After a decade of teaching Creative Writing at Central Juvenile Hall through the Inside OUT Writers program, Miss Bliss found it time to create a book specifically to cultivate self-love and respect in the young women she encounters in the halls. The book was made to size to fit in their bras and is bound with no staples allowing it to live and not be counted as contraband. The pages illuminate, through words and illustrations, the light and love in the hearts of each young women underneath the very difficult life-circumstances they face. The chapbook is a love letter, speaking piercingly to all young women in and outside of physical bars

When a Magnolia tree catches fire in an aged and ominous women’s prison, three female inmates forgotten and left to perish are jolted as their lives are threatened, into memories of their past that inform the truth of their souls and the urgent need to expose the inhumanity of the prison to the world.

TREE OF FIRE is a play written and directed by RAW Founder/Creative Director Jesse Bliss that has been on its journey since 2009. Excerpts of the piece have been performed at UCLA, Theatre of Note and S.P.A.R.C. @ The Old Jail in Venice, and a full staged reading was presented at the former Lincoln Heights Jail. The play had recently had a staged reading at Occidental College, UC Santa Cruz and a full run at The Rosenthal Theater at  Inner-City Arts.

"...A powerful play that expresses the rage women feel imprisoned by the limits of men's conscience... An authentic voice comes shinning through with poetry and courage."  -

-Josefina Lopez, Screenwriter & Playwright

"Tree of Fire" sings and screams for those who have no voice. It's a modern day "Trojan Women" that leads us on a mythic journey into the minds and spirits of incarcerated women.  We meet women who are separated from their families, from their lives, from time itself.  Never self pitying and often very funny, this piece takes us into the soul of their experience.  Style and content are boldly woven together to give us an intimate encounter with the heart of the imprisoned."

-Leon Martell, Screenwriter & Playwright
